When the Mountains Whisper and God Answers
Porch Light & Prairie Sky
The mornings in Montana are starting to change. There’s a coolness now — the kind that makes you reach for your sweater before stepping outside, coffee mug in hand. The air feels different, crisp and expectant, as if the mountains themselves know that summer is winding down. Cherokee walks along the porch beside me, her paws clicking against the porch boards. Out in the distance, the pine trees sway in the breeze, whispering secrets only God could write into the wind.
Life here has a way of slowing you down. People wave when you drive by. The grocery store cashier knows you by name. There’s a rhythm to the days that feels steady — hikes in the fresh air, sunsets that set the sky on fire, and nights when the stars look so close you could almost touch them.
And yet, even in the middle of this beauty, my heart has been restless.
The Heart Check
I’ve learned something in these Montana months — you can be in the most breathtaking place and still feel that holy stirring inside, the one that tells you God isn’t done moving you.
I’ve asked Him more than once, “Lord, did I hear You right? Did You bring me here for a reason… or just for a season?”
Sometimes His answers come softly, not as a lightning bolt, but as a slow turning of the heart. A quiet nudge during a morning walk. A verse that catches your breath when you open your Bible. A conversation that feels more like confirmation than coincidence.
Lately, I’ve been reminded of Proverbs 16:9: “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”
I’m starting to see that this season — even with its unanswered questions — has been a necessary pause. A place to rest, to listen, and to let Him strengthen my spirit before the next thing.
When God Redirects
I think we sometimes forget that obedience isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a daily yes. We step where He says to step, even when the path turns sooner than we expected.
Montana has been that for me — a step of obedience, a place where He’s given me beauty for my soul, lessons for my heart, and clarity I didn’t even know I needed. And now… I can feel Him shifting the compass again.
I don’t know all the details yet, and I’m learning to be okay with that. What I do know is this: God never wastes a season. Every porch conversation with Him, every sunrise over the mountains, every quiet moment of wrestling — it’s all part of the story He’s writing.
A Gentle Encouragement for You
Maybe you’re in your own in-between right now — standing in a place you thought would be “forever,” but feeling that quiet nudge toward something new.
Friend, it’s okay. It’s okay to move forward. It’s okay to admit when a season is shifting. It’s okay to step into something, gather what God wanted you to learn, and then follow Him into the next chapter.
Psalm 37:23 says, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” That means we don’t have to see the whole map — we just have to keep saying yes to the next step He sets in front of us.
Closing the Day
As I sit here tonight, the sun is dipping low, painting the prairie sky with soft gold and rose. Cherokee is curled up at my feet, and the air smells faintly of pine and woodsmoke. I can hear the mountains in the distance, whispering again — and I’m leaning in, listening for the One who knows the way forward.
Wherever you are tonight, I pray you’ll pause long enough to listen too. You never know what gentle shift He might be guiding you toward. And friend, you can trust this — His plans are good, His timing is perfect, and His hand is steady on your path.
